IWSG: But I Don't Want To Edit!

This would be the first time I've actually participated in Ninja-Captain Alex's monthly support group.

The problem is, I'm not insecure about doing the editing. It's a time issue.

I want to read. I want to watch TV and movies. Play video games.

Too much to do, not enough time to do it.

I know I should just carve out the time and get it done. The WIP needs it.

Thoughts?

I have this same problem

I feel like, I wrote the story, so why can't it just be done?? And then I read it over and realise just how much there is to fix, how little of what was in my head I actually got down on paper, how many plot holes there are, etc.
Having a schedule really works for me. Monday and Wednesday nights I edit, Tuesdays and Fridays I blog & generally doodle on the internet, Thursday was supposed to be knitting or scrapbooking but more often than not ends up being go out with friends night, and weekends I stay off the internet, and I get to read and devote time to family or knitting or what have you, without feeling guilty that I'm not working on the story. Unless I want to edit (ha!), but I'm not allowed on the internet, since if I can spend time on that, I certainly could be editing.
Writing's so easy, I don't mind doing it every day when I'm drafting a new story. Editing's so much work.....

Oh yeah. I don't want to edit either. But then again, I've done the whole not having an edited MS thing before and it's pretty disappointing. So I want it to be perfect, I just don't want to have to rewrite the whole thing to do it... Why does great have to take so long?

Being that I can't finish shit, I really have no support to offer you! (Whoops) HAHA But, I can only imagine how time consuming it would be to have a completed novel and then go back and essentially re-write it a few more times! BUT-- IT WILL BE WORTH IT! You can do it!!!!

Give yourself a goal. I'm editing now and my goal is one chapter a day. My chapters are short so it's manageable and it makes me progress toward the finish line.

Oh boy. That's like asking the to solve the mysteries of life. I have difficulty trying to find time just to write. If I go back to edit, how am I going to get the demons out of my head?

You just do it. (I know - Nike!) It's like a switch in your head that makes the decision. Once you've done that, then you find the time much easier.
Welcome to the IWSG, Joshua!!

I don't want to edit either. My WIP was done last June and I haven't started the edits. That's the thing about being a self-publisher. Nobody can make me do the editing except me. In the meantime, I'm on to the next project. *sigh* Let me know what you come up with :)

Man, you're preaching to the choir.
I mean, it's always going to be a time issue. And i'm with you, i have so many lovely lovely games to play.
Recently i've cut back on the TV time. At the very least, it helps me fit in more reading time

Reading. TV. Video games. I'm totally with you, and not finding the time to work on my WIP. This is the weekend to get my act together!

From what I've heard from other authors, the trick is to pick one of those things (Tv, video games etc.) and cut it out of your life until you've finished editing. Getting your video games back will be an incentive to finish the WIP :)

The editing needs to be done. Just organize a timeline and do it.

This is my main problem; all I need to fix everything in my life, is a little more time! There's never enough time to do all of the things I want to do. It sucks, and is probably the reason I'm having such a bad week.

I'm with Azia. :)

And I'm too stubborn to write anything that might need editing. So I stick to short stuff. :)

It's just one of those things. I haven't played a video game in months. Months! Except some random Settlers of Catan.
