The Premise
I had a friend in high school who was, dare I say, obsessed with David Letterman's "Top Ten" lists. So much so that he would share his own top ten lists over lunch periods. The subject matter of those lists is not retained in my long-term memory, no matter how good it is. However, I'm sure I could ask him since I still know how to contact him. Thank you, Blogger and Facebook. One day, as I was reading through the blogs that I follow, I saw that many of them have theme days. That's when I thought I would try my hand at my own theme day, and "Top Five Tuesday" was born. The only disclaimer is that these lists represent my own opinions and are subject to change whenever the hell I feel like it. Also, these lists are not in ranking order, unless specifically said.
Top Five Favorite Words
1. Dilettante : An admirer or lover of the arts; a person having a superficial interest in an art or a branch of knowledge.
2. Diffident : Hesitant in acting or speaking through lack of self-confidence.
3. Defenestration : A throwing of a person or thing out of a window.
4. Halcyon : Care-free.
5. Quiescent : Peaceful.
Then there are the curse words. :o)

Plethora is a favorite. So is disestablishmentarianism.
Bifurcated, Termagant, Deleterious, Quotidian, and Maudlin are some of my favorites. I'm with Alex, "plethora" is just so much fun to say.
Probably too many too name. But of your examples, I do love me some quiescence.
I think you have done my hubby a favor - now he can use diffident as an adjective for me. Just before he uses defenestration (which has the French word fenêtre as a root) on me.
I like quintessential. I like Mama too.
Lacidaisical has always been a favorite of mine. The other day, a friend and I were discussing how "ostentatious" is an ostentatious word. I really love these $5 words though. Fun to use in jest especially.
There is a word for being thrown out of a window? I love the word Anthropology, the way it sounds and what it means. It's awesome :)

I'm not sure if I have a favorite word? I've never really thought about it...of course I'm sure that if Bree was asked what my favorite words were. She would say:
1- No!
2- Stop!
3- Bree!
4- Flush!!!
5- Shhhhhhh!!!!!
Hands down, my favorite word is "car". Say it in your head. Car.
Something about that hard c followed by the r is the scratch to that itch in my brain.

How fun is this? Hmmm... I hate the word "interjected" and "uttered" as tags in writing. I have a couple of friends who hate the word "Moist" which makes me laugh. I do love the word "obnoxious" funny enough. Love the way it rolls off the tongue... ;)
I love "quincunx" which sounds dirty, but isn't. It's the way the dots are set up on the number 5on a die. Hard to use in a sentence, though.

Well. English is not my native language, so I'm not even going to try out for any strange words :)..
I'll just say this, and it sounds really lame okay. But to me, hearing the voice of that special someone ~ he could say just whatever he'd like and THAT'S my favourite words.
It's as simple as that, to me anyway.

very cool words. I love all of them! I don't know if I have favs right now but when I was a kid I just loved the sound of "mediocre" and thought it was an awesome word and meant something akin to awesome. Then I found out it's meaning and felt pretty disappointed.

I'm laughing SO hard right now. I happened to catch Alex's comment because it was first. My son's favorite word is disestablishmentarianism. I mean he LOVES that word. He also plays the guitar in a band. I think they would get along great. We'll accept my son is only fourteen and thinks he knows everything.

Always a sucker for all those gutteral German words. (So, gutteral is a favorite word...lol And 'fotch-face' - meaning cranky...which may not even be a real word. My family says it, though. Ha!)

I love the word "bucolic" which means "rustic, pastoral, country-styled" or also "pertaining to herdsmen or peasants". I don't consider a scene truly bucolic unless it contains a cow though ;)
I really thought Douche would've made the list.
Fork is one of my favorite words.
I have lots of favorite words, but one that pops to mind first is quirk. Just quirky that way I guess. ;D I also like eclectic, cause it describes my taste in music.
They used the word defenestration on Phineas and Ferb in the game show episode.
Hmm. This is tough. I think there are too many English words for me to choose favourites!
Right now I can only think of my two fave Afrikaans words: pantoffel (slipper) and snoesig (cuddly). I've always thought those words are so cute!
